Week 2: Workouts

Yesterday marked the end of week two of training for me.  I'm training to get back into shape to be able to start a marathon training plan on June 1.  The second week went well and I'm starting to feel much more fit.

Monday:  4 miles
Tuesday: strength training
Wednesday:  3 miles
Thursday: off
Friday:  5 miles and strength training
Saturday: 4 miles
Sunday:  off

I kept my pace under a 10 minute mile pace and it was actually closer to a 9:30 pace most of the time.  That is an improvement!  I'm hoping to keep upping the mileage and increasing the pace as I go.

Wish me luck for week 3!

Casino Night

This past weekend the non-profit company that Derek works for held a Casino Night fundraiser.  It was western themed so I got out the old cowboy boots to head on over.

I had never been to one of these before so upon arrival I collected my cup with my fake $1,000 bill in it and headed off to cash it in for chips.  The room was a bit overwhelming with all of the tables (but the decorations looked great!!) so I picked "craps" first.  I had never played before but it seemed like the loudest, most entertaining table in the room.  I had also heard that nights like this are a great way to learn how to play.  It's a pretty nifty idea...the people working the tables - they help teach you how to play!  They wanted you to learn and win!  Crazy!  Unfortunately, I still wouldn't really be able to teach you how to play craps if you asked, but I was starting to get the hang of it.  A little.

The guys that taught me how to play craps.

It was so fun to see all of the swim parents, family members, and community getting together to support aquatics in our town.  It was a pretty good turnout and it was so much fun!  I don't think I expected it to be as fun as it was.

I caught my cowboy mid-sentence.  What a cutie :)

Jan and Dusty even got in on the action.  Jan was pretty good - I think she taught those dealers a thing or two about paying attention while playing :).

At the end of the night they had everyone trade in their chips for raffle tickets and then they pulled the raffle tickets for each gift to see who won.  I never win anything so I wasn't expecting much...but I won me some Sugarland tickets for this weekend!!!!!  I am so pumped!

Can you tell?  Derek got this picture as I was headed up to collect the tickets at the end of the night.  :)

It was such a fun night and such a great way for everyone to show their support for the Triangle Aquatic Center.

Week 1: Workouts

I promised I would let you all help keep me accountable, so here we go....

Last Monday was the start of Week 1.  I wanted to up my frequency of runs but no overdo it.  I think I succeeded...

Monday:  3 mile run, 800 meter swim
Tuesday: 3 mile run, strength training and core work
Wednesday: 3 mile run
Thursday: 2 mile run, strength training and core work
Friday: 4 mile run
Saturday: rest
Sunday: rest

Total miles:  15

I am timing my runs and averaging about a 10 minute mile pace, maybe a little under.  Just trucking along.

This coming week the goal is to up the mileage and the pace (just a little).  I started off strong this morning with a 4 mile run at 9:20 pace!

Have a wonderful week!

Getting in Shape

Finally, I will admit it for all of you to hear...

I have signed up for the 2012 Chicago Marathon!

Why does this make me nervous? Why did I wait two months to share this? Well...if you remember, back in the late summer/fall of 2011 I trained for the Detroit marathon, but gave up about a month before the big race.  I want to run Chicago so badly! - but I know that I need to commit to it.  So y'all are going to help me stay accountable.  I'm doing alright so far.

I have been upping my running ever since I took the break in January to help my foot heal.  I am up to running 4 days a week and my mileage is increasing.  My foot still hurts a little, but it doesn't hurt any more when I run, so I am trudging along anyway.  I started off running every other day (which was actually only about 3 times per week) and at a pretty slow pace.  I am now up to running 4 consecutive days at a faster pace.  I am planning on starting some longer runs this month.

My current plan:  To spend the next month and a half getting in the best shape possible.  I don't want to start any long runs (nothing over 12) yet because I don't want to burn out too early.  I am running often and doing lots of strength training and stretching to help out.  I also want to drop a little bit of weight (about 5 pounds) and make sure that I am my fittest self.

On June 1, I will begin a four month marathon training program that will have me ready for 26.2 on October 7, 2012.  Yay!!

I will document some of my workouts on here and let you know about my progress.  I have a long way to go, but I am so excited!!

No giving up this time.  :)

Cruise Pictures

After our weekend trip when Sara sent me the pictures I posted yesterday of Derek and I, she also included a few off of her camera from the shower we threw for Cameron and Mandy a few weeks ago.  I can't resist and I have to share them with y'all.

Va Beach Weekend

This past weekend we headed up to Virginia Beach to see Cameron, Derek's best friend, and Mandy get married!  In addition to the wedding, Derek got some golfing in, I took some walks on the beach with Sara.  We also got to try out a lot of seafood - one of the best parts of going to the beach!

It was so nice to see the beach again.

We got there and there was this fenced in area and we had no idea what it was for until the horses showed up! - right outside our hotel room.  This is where they would send people off on rides down the beach.

View from the balcony again.

Rehearsal dinner....

Hillary, Lindsey, and I.
These two girls were dating two of the other groomsmen and we ended up spending quite a bit of time together - yay for new friends!  They were so nice and fun to talk to.

The wedding... I did not do a good job at taking pictures, so I am sorry to say that I actually only have one of the happy couple... but I did get a few of the awesome tails!

The bride looked absolutely stunning, the wedding was beautiful and we had a blast!  A great weekend, all around.  They even had a photo booth there...It was a lot of fun!

Two Year Celebration

I finally got around to documenting our little night out a few weeks ago to celebrate two years of dating, so enjoy!  It was a wonderful night.

Derek took me to Brasa, a Brazilian Steakhouse in town.  Yum!  When we were picking where to go I had one requirement - I wanted to dress up!  Derek had one too - he wanted a good steak.  Boom.  Great choice.

It was so nice to get dressed up and spend some quality time together.

Picture in the car...Can you tell that I was slightly worried about our surroundings?

We tried chicken hearts.  Ew.  (They actually weren't that bad, just a weird, chewy texture.)

After dinner Derek wanted to go get cupcakes (cute idea, I know!) but the cupcake place was closed. :(

Instead, we headed home to exchange cards and presents.  Derek was so sweet and stopped for a cupcake anyway on the way home.  If you know Derek, you know this is slightly weird because he does not eat sweets.  He got a cupcake though - it was because he had already brought along two candles along for us to blow out and wish on, commemorating our two years together.  I thought it was so sweet!

I'm sorry for the picture overload but I love looking back at all of them and couldn't choose any to leave out.

I'm pretty lucky. ;)

Easter

My dad came into town last week to help me fix some things up around the house and my mom followed on Friday.  It was so nice to get to spend time with the two of them and I am so excited that I got to spend Easter with them!

Here is a breakdown of the week...

My dad helped me with some tasks:
  • Weather stripping the front door
  • Painting the master bath
  • Caulking in the bathrooms
  • Re-wiring my smoke detector
  • Landscaping
  • Changing light bulbs (yes, I am that bad)

He also got to play some golf with Derek and Dusty, we saved a snapping turtle's life and I treated him to some home-cooked meals.  :)

My mom came in on Friday night so the weekend was jam-packed.  Saturday morning we hit up the Flea Market (which was crazy crowded!) and then we headed to lunch to sit in the sun and enjoy the view of the city.

After that Derek and my dad headed to the driving range and my mom and I went shopping.  I think I tried on every dress in Cameron Village and I still have nothing to show for it.  I did not find a dress for the wedding we are going to this weekend, but I did find a sun dress - maybe for the rehearsal dinner?

Saturday night we went to dinner at The Pit, one of the best NC barbeque restaurants I know of.  It's a must for out of town visitors!  We had a blast!

Sunday we went to early church and then headed back to my place to get the food ready.  We had Jan and Dusty over for Easter lunch and it was so fun!  I forgot to take any pictures :( but it was so nice to be able to spend a holiday with Derek and both of our parents.  After lunch we went on a nice long walk and enjoyed the sun.

Sunday night, after a little bit of Masters and resting on the couch we played some putt-putt.  Derek was victorious, but I was only one stroke behind!!

Yesterday we ran some errands and tied up some loose ends before I had to drop my parents off at the airport.  My mom couldn't stand the hole in my couch so she stitched it up in five minutes.  She had been begging to do that all weekend.  I'm pretty lucky that they like to help me out so much.  If I had taken that to a tailor it would have cost me!

Thank you Mom and Dad, for all that you do!  It was a wonderful week!  Love you!
