Workouts: Week 10



This week was a little different.  On Thursday I left town at 4am with 45 swimmers and am actually still not home. Ugh.  I made use of my time before I left and I also used the hotel treadmill a bit.  Either way, I stayed on track enough so that I can start right where I left off this week.

Monday:  8 mile run, 3 mile walk with a friend
Tuesday:  off
Wednesday:  abs and jump rope
Thursday:  off
Friday:  3.5 mile run, abs and arm weights
Saturday:  3.5 mile run
Sunday:  strength day for legs, abs, and more arm weights

Total:  15 miles

Hopefully I'll be back on track this week.

Like Father, Like Son

This past weekend we got together with D's family to celebrate some birthdays, and of course, father's day!

It was so fun to get together with his whole family.  They are such great people, they love to laugh, and I always have a great time with them.  There are some little ones too that are so cute and eat up being the center of attention. It's so nice of them to be so welcoming to me, too.  With my family so far away, I really miss being with my parents and sisters for a lot of holidays, so it is so nice to be a part of D's family celebrations.  So many things remind me of my own family and help me feel closer to them, as well.

Anyway, Derek and his father showed up wearing the same shirt - great minds think alike!

Workouts: Week 9



This week was a bit light.  I had a super busy schedule this week and got workouts in where I could.  I would love to say that this coming week I will make up for it, but I'm not so sure that's true.

This week is not that busy, but I can only run Monday-Wednesday and then my work does not allow for any more runs.  So, the following week will have to be my catch-up week.  I really hope I can keep maintaining in the meantime.

Last weeks workouts:

Monday:  Off
Tuesday:  2 miles
Wednesday:  90 minutes of strength training mixed with jump rope (I barely walked for 2 days after this).
Thursday:  4 miles w/hills, fast!
Friday:  Off
Saturday:  6
Sunday:  off

Total:  12 miles.

Yikes.  Hopefully I will have better news for you next week...

Happy Fathers Day!

Happy Father's Day!



My dad is the best.  I can remember when we were little, he would always ask us, "who wants to go to the store with me?!" Like it was the coolest thing in the world.  When I tagged along, we would have these long, conversations about everything and anything that came to mind.  As I got older, some of my favorite times with my dad are during car rides, while we are still having those conversations.  They are now deeper, normally pretty philosophical and centering on how we are going to change the world.  What would we do if we were president?  How would we solve the worlds problems?  It seems funny, but these conversations are some of my favorite things in the world.

 

Are we going to do the great things that we talk about?  Maybe.  But what we are doing is sharing our dreams and our hopes and supporting each other with their dreams and hopes.  The best part - I know that if I ever wanted to try any of these crazy schemes, I know that he'd be right behind me the whole way.



One more reason he is the best...the other day when I asked him what he wanted for father's day, he said nothing.  I, of course, gave him a hard time.  "We're going to get you something anyway, so it might as well be something you want." etc, etc.  He said something that made a pretty big impact on me.  He said, "I have all I ever wanted in your mother, you, and your sisters, and I don't need anything else.  You are everything that I need."  Doesn't that just make your eyes tear up?  It does mine.



So, yeah, my dad is the best.  And I really wish I could be with him today to celebrate his day.  
But I'll get to see him soon.

Snapshots from my Run

I've went running on campus this week and I took my phone yesterday to use for music.  I took some pictures along the way, just for fun.  It was a 4 mile run, in 70 degree weather!  I went at 7am right after I finished coaching morning practice and right before camp started.






There are some gorgeous churches on campus!



Running on brick streets is fun, but I have to keep my eyes down because I almost tripped a few times.

It was fun to run in a new environment.  I found I ran faster than normal, possibly because I wasn't used to the route and that was with way more hills than normal.  Mixing it up is the way to go!

Workouts: Week 8

This was a big week!!  And yes, right now I am feeling fierce.  Hahaha.

Monday:  Off
Tuesday:  5.5 miles
Wednesday:  Off
Thursday:  5 miles
Friday:  3.25 miles + Strength
Saturday:  Off
Sunday:  10 miles

Total:  23.75 miles

This week was great!!  I felt pretty good leading up to the long run and I think I could have gone farther on that run if I wasn't worried about getting to work late.  It was probably a good idea I didn't push it because I don't want to overdo it.  Baby steps.  My long run was done at about 10:30 pace overall.  I had some 9:30 miles in there, but it went in waves, feel good for 4 miles, bad for 2, good for 2, bad for 1, good for one.  It's all part of the experience though.

This coming week is super busy for me at work, so I knew I wouldn't be getting many runs in over 3-4 miles.  I figured I would make it a recovery week for just that reason.  So Sunday, I set off thinking that I would go as far as I could in the allotted time that I had.  My goal was to top 8 miles.  That I did :).  This week I will get as much running in as I can, but I have about 30 minutes free between 7am and 8pm each day, so we will see...

A Few Things for Friday


What I'm loving this week...

1.  Frozen grapes.  They are an amazing summer snack and easy to grab a few for the road.



2.  Running outside!  The weather this week has been great in the mid to high 70's...however as it gets warmer, I must learn to run earlier.  We have a high of 88 tomorrow.  No more saving my runs for the middle of the day.  This picture was taken after I ran 5 miles at noon on Wednesday...it was only 77 and sunny but I it seemed so much warmer!



3.  OPI Pamplona Purple nail polish.  I have been wearing this for weeks and I love it!  




4.  Golfing with Derek.  I really like that I can golf with him.  It is so peaceful on the green, especially when we go at night, and he is a very good coach.  I'm getting better!  I don't think I'll ever be able to beat D though...he's pretty good.




5.  Birthdays!!  Who am I kidding?  I always love birthdays.  Last weekend we helped celebrate Mandy's birthday at Mellow Mushroom and it was so much fun.  


6.  Little shoes for little feet.  I found these last week when I went to get something from Buy Buy Baby and I fell in love...I might have gotten three pairs!  It's a good thing I know a few people with little ones on the way!




I think that's about it...I've got a busy few weeks coming up, wish me luck!

Brussel Sprout Salad

I know, I know.  Unless you are really weird like me, Brussel Sprout Salad is not a title that will get you excited to eat.  But don't knock it 'til you try it!



I saw this over on The Scribble Pad a few days ago, so I cannot take credit for it, but man, is it good!

Ingredients:
-brussels sprouts
-lemon juice
-freshly grated parmesan cheese
-ground pepper
-olive oil
-walnuts

Toast walnuts.  Thinly slice raw brussels sprouts and place in a bowl. Add the chopped walnuts when they are cooled. Add the rest of the ingredients to taste and toss.  I found I liked it best with more lemon flavor and on the day after I had made it, after letting it sit in the fridge for a bit.  The lemon flavor with the parmesan accent was so good!








Can you tell the theme of the summer food is healthy?  I'm working on eating better.  The exercise comes easily to me...the eating healthy part...not so much.

Workouts: Week 7

Cannot believe I'm already on week 7!  It seems like I just started this a few days ago.

This past week was a good one.  I had my first long run (defined by me as being over 6 miles) and I felt pretty good!

Monday: Off.  It was a holiday.  I went to the pool :)
Tuesday: 6 miles
Wednesday: Off
Thursday:  4 miles and weights
Friday: 5 miles - For some reason this was one of the hardest runs I've ever done.  I don't know if it is the weight training from the day before or the crazy humidity, but I was struggling like crazy.
Saturday: Off
Sunday:  7.25 miles - I was planning on going farther, but I slept in and the direct sunlight of my 11am start was making me dizzy so I called it quits a little early.

Total:  22.25 Miles

I'll take it.  I reached my goals, learned a few lessons (ahem, not sleeping in until 10am on the day of a long run in the NC summer heat), and am still feeling great!  My foot rarely bothers me anymore.  I never went to the doctor, so I still have no idea what it was, but hopefully that pain is gone for good.  I also am continuing to learn to listen to my body.  After that crazy, awful 5 mile run on Friday I took Saturday to rest.  I made sure to drink a ton of water and was conscious about getting off my legs when it wasn't necessary.  By Saturday I was feeling great again, but I still waited until Sunday for the big run.

One more week closer!  My summer schedule will start getting busy right about now so I will really have to work to keep my miles up.  I have swim meets the next 3 weekends.  One of them is a 5 day trip with the team...we will have to see how that goes...
