Friday Favorites

I just started a new job, I'm training for the marathon, and I've got a little bit of stress and uncertainty in my life, so things around here are not the easiest right now, but there are things that make my day a little bit better ever day.  The littlest things make me smile.  And I love that they still can.

1.  Pineapple Greek Yogurt.  My older sister, Paula, introduced me to this on a summer trip a few weeks ago and I love it.  I mean, really, love it.  By far the best of the greek yogurts!

2.  Lilies.  My roomate brought home flowers for me on Monday to celebrate the first day of school and they have been filling my place with a wonderful aroma ever since.  They are beautiful!!  She is so sweet.  She has a mother who is a teacher and knows that the loss of summer and the mix of feelings of the first week of school sometimes need a pick-me-up.  It was a wonderful treat when I didn't even know I needed it.

3.  My new dark hair!  I went dark again for fall and I love it.

4.  Going straight from work to the pool.  This will only be possible for another week or so, but it sure does make each day so much better!

5.  Nilla Wafers.  Yum.  They are my weakness right now.

6.  My friends and family.  I have the wisest, most supportive, most understanding friends and family in the world.  Seriously.  They have helped me more than words can express the past few weeks, and I love them all so much.  I am slow to open up and sometimes they have to pry things out of me, but when they do, it feels so much better.  They are the best and I don't know what I ever did to deserve them all.

The fam.

7.  I will get to meet my nephew in one month!  Ahhhhhh!  I can't believe it's almost here!  Check out Paula's Blog for more fun news.  I am spoiling him with gifts already so that I can be the favorite aunt even though I am half way across the country! (That's right Cath, you have some serious competition!)

8.  Three day weekend!!  Ahh, it's a perfect end to the first week of school.  This weekend on the agenda:  a baby shower, socializing with new co-workers, meeting a new little one, and spending a day with a friend.  Hopefully I get a long run in too!

And that's about it! Happy Friday everyone!

House Updates

I had a bit of free time lately before I started my new job and I spent a lot of it fixing up my house.  I've been here for four and a half years, so things needed to be deep cleaned, repainted, fixed up, etc.  I repainted the foyer and switched up the decorations, I repainted the living room and switched up a few things.  I also got to add a few new things, (thanks Paula and Matt!)

This is how it all started.  I tried about 4-5 different samples of gray on the walls first.  You can see the little squares everyone on the wall.  Once I picked Rockport Gray by Benjamin Moore, I got to work.  This was a big task!  I think both coats of the living room took me two days and the kitchen took another day.  The stairway has yet to be tackled :)  but hey, it looks great until you start up to the second level.  I love the new color.  It's a little darker and a lot less green!  I'm still in the process of deciding how to decorate and what colors I want to use, but this is what I have right now...

This print was a bday present to myself :) it hangs above the fridge now.

I painted the entry-way a darker gray and re-arranged the hanging stuff.  Don't mind the mess, please.

This gives you an idea of the new wall colors, and you can see the awesome print Paula and Matt gave me for my bday.

I'm sure I'll have another update for you soon, especially because I switch things up daily now.

Workouts: Week 19

This week was a pretty good one!  Well, running wise, at least.  I made up my missed long run from last week and I completed my long run for this week.  Overall, I am feeling good.  I had a really hard time recovering from my long run on Saturday.  I'm not sure if I was already sick and I just exaserbated it or if I made myself sick by running and maybe not hydrating well?  Either way, I spent a lot of time resting this weekend and today is my first day of school.  Finger's crossed that it goes well.

Monday:  13 miles
Tuesday: off
Wednesday:  6 miles

A Summer Salad

This weekend I wanted to make something for dinner and I had no idea what.  All I knew was that I was in the mood for a bit of lime.  So I headed to Harris Teater to find something.

Here is what I picked up:
-2 limes
-1 lemon
-bowtie pasta
-1 avacado
-raw shrimp
-1 can corn
-1 container grape tomatoes
-Fresh basil

Here is what I did with it...

1.  Cook the pasta.
2.  Marinate the shrimp in the juice squeezed from 1/2 of a lime and 1/2 of a lemon.  Cook on the grill in my grill-pan.
2.  Cut avacado, cut tomatoes, and put them in a big bowl with the corn.
3.  Add juice squeezed from the other 1 1/2 of the limes left over.
4.  Add a bit of fresh, chopped basil.
5.  Add pasta and shrimp after they are chilled.
6.  Mix it all together and chill in the fridge for an hour.
(Add as much or as little of the ingredients as you would like, you can't go wrong!)

So good and super easy.

The Big 28

Yesterday was my birthday and holy cow; I am officially old.

I celebrated with my family in Rhode Island last week.  Every year growing up, I always got to celebrate my birthday at the beach.  It was awesome because that meant I got to see my aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents too!  In a family like mine, where we kind of live all over the map, a birthday with extended family was the coolest thing in the world.  It still is.  Living half-way across the country from my parents and sisters, it is quite amazing that I still get to celebrate with them.  I am so thankful for it.

Did I mention that we turn into 5 year olds when we cross the state line into Rhode Island??  Seriously...the closer we get to the cottage, the more ridiculous we act.

Paula doesn't eat the lobsters.  She thinks it is sad. :(

For dinner on our birthdays growing up, it was a treat to get to pick what we had for dinner.  I was always the luckiest because Grandma would cook her blueberry cake for my dessert :).  I requested two of my favorite foods, lobster and swordfish and my mom happily agreed.  It was delicious!!  We love playing with the lobsters and a few years ago Catherine researched and figured out how to hypnotize the lobsters.  We can now make them fall asleep.

I love my family.  They always know how to make a birthday gal feel special.

Last night, on my actual birthday, Derek and I enjoyed an awesome dinner to celebrate too!  What a lucky gal I am!  I feel very, very special.

Here is to a great year!!

Week at Quonny

I flew in last Saturday and met up with Paula and Matt to head to the cottage to see the rest of the gang!

Our week was full of...walks, reading in the sun, sitting on the deck, swimming in the ocean, building sand castles, searching for sea glass, watching the Olympics, eating sea food, trips to the flea market and Watch Hill, hanging with grandma, laughing together, and much, much more.

The girls with our Grandma.  She is one incredibly strong woman and still keeping us on our toes at 89!

My dad and I.  He finally took off that awful maize and blue to support the right school.  Go Illini!

The weather all week was absolutely gorgeous.  We lucked out!  There were a few days with fog, but for the most part mid-80's and mostly sunny with a nice breeze off the ocean.

Bathing beauties :)

We were by far the oldest "kids" on the beach who dared to play in the sand.

Watch Hill.

I want to go back.

Sunsets in Rhode Island

This past week in Rhode Island was perfect!  We had lots of family laughs, time with Grandma, and fun in the sun.  More on all that later...I still need to get everything organized.  But I can show you our sunset pictures.   And I'm warning you, I couldn't pick any to leave out, so there are a lot of them...

There is no prettier place.

From the top deck of the cottage.

One night the whole family took a walk down to the breachway to get a better view.  We were a little early, but we had some fun, got some cute photo's and still got to see an awesome sunset.

Is she not the cutest little mama-to-be you've ever seen?!

Catherine - being a nerd.

All of us, being nerds. :)  Listening to the baby.

The necessary sister self-pictures.  We are so odd.  But I love it.

I miss them all already.  More to come tomorrow.
