Friday Favorites

1.  I taught myself how to do a sock bun.  Thank goodness - a quick, easy, kinda cute way to wear my hair.  Love it.

2.  We had our big State Championship swim meet this past weekend and it was so fun for me to see my team starting new traditions.  The boys all gave themselves mohawks for the meet.  Awesome, I love this tradition.  Little did they know, when I was in high school, we used to dye our hair for the state meet.  I also got my flair on and made sure that my nails were nice and school spirited for the event. :)  Oh, and it paid off - we won!!

Old-school.  This is my coach and myself as a junior in high school.  Hello hot pink hair!!

3. I got a Valentine's Day care package from my parents.  Yesssss.  They are so thoughtful and I know I am technically a grown-up, but most days I still feel like a little kid, so it is perfect.  A nice little piece of home.

4.  I have started running again!! Last week I went to Lake Johnson to run with a friend and we saw this guy there fishing.  Needless to say, I snapped the picture and we booked it out of there.

5.  Paula posted some pictures on her blog from Christmas and one of them just make so incredibly happy.  I wanted to share it with you.  What a wonderful holiday it was :)

Making Good on My Promise

At the beginning of the year I promised myself that this year would be different.  Last year was tough for me, but I promised myself that January 1st turned over a new leaf.  This year I would be happy, I would live with purpose, and I would work towards my goals.  Those are very ambiguous goals, and definitely not measurable, so when I saw a creative way to break them down a little bit more (source), I made a point to repeat it.  Identify what you will say yes to, and what you will say no to.  It's simple, and it makes sense.  I'm thankful that I saw this.

To continue my goal of 2013 being my best year yet, here is my plan.

In 2013 I am saying yes to...

- eating healthier
- working out 4 times a week
- taking time to pray
- forgiveness
- hanging out with the girls
- making time for my family
- being a positive person
- reading more
- doing things for ME
- letting me be me and owning it
- taking more pictures
- spontaneity
- sending snail mail

In 2013 I am saying no to...

- wasting money
- jobs that aren't my passion
- trying to please everyone
- wasting time on social media
- negative people
- clutter
- unfinished projects
- waiting for tomorrow

Yes, today's is Valentine's Day.  I am spending the day making Valentine's cards in Spanish with my classes and the night with great friends.

Happy Valentine's Day to you, too.

Broccoli Done Right

Last week on Pinterest, I saw a pin that declared the recipe to be the "Best Broccoli of Your Life."  That's quite a statement.  While I don't love broccoli, I really don't mind it's taste, so I figured this had to be pretty good if the average broccoli-hater even loved it and since I am trying to eat a little healthier, I had to give it a try.  Here is the original recipe.

Now, per usual, I did not have all of the original ingredients, so I made it my own.  I scrapped some things and added some others. I didn't have fresh garlic and I didn't use olive oil.  I kept it pretty simple.

Here is what I did:

- lay broccoli on a cookie sheet.  I covered my cookie sheet with tinfoil and Pam for easy clean-up :)
- sprinkle generously with lemon juice
- sprinkle with freshly grated parmesian cheese
- add salt and pepper
- cook at 400 degrees for about 12 minutes

I was hopeful, but wow! this recipe far exceeded my expectations.  It is a.maze.ing.  You have to try it.  I will eat broccoli every day if I can cook it like this.  The pin said it works for asparagus too, I will be trying that next!

I of course, forgot to take pictures, so do without.  But I promise, it's good.

Happy Tuesday!

Ben's Special Day

A few weeks ago I headed north to Chicago for Ben's christening.  It was such a special weekend and I am so happy and proud to have been a part of it as the godmother.  After the church, we all headed to Uncommon Ground  for lunch and to visit.  If you've never been there to eat and you are in the area - go!! I highly recommend the pumpkin ravioli.  It's insanely good!

Paula and Matt couldn't have planned a more special day for the little guy.

It was such a nice weekend and while the service was on Sunday, I got to spend Friday night and all day Saturday just relaxing with my family.  It was perfect.

This hat makes me smile.

Ben loves being naked.  The less clothes he is wearing, the happier he is :).  It seems to me that Paula and Matt better watch out for this boy - he may be a handful.  He is starting to get ticklish!! Yes.

Hanging with Gramma and smiles for the camera.

He loves his Aunt Lor the best :).  Haha.  I keep telling myself that.

After my dad picked me up at the airport the first night we met my mom for dinner, just the three of us.  It was so nice.  I love my whole family, but sometimes it is nice just to have some time where it's just me and them.  I'm learning to treasure that time even more as I get older.

A Reason to Dance

I know this has been all over lately, but I still love it.

"Not cool, Robert Frost, not cool."

"It's everybody's duty to give the world a reason to dance"

This has been all over facebook and twitter lately and for a good reason.  It's motivating, even if it is a little kid.  I'm actually planning on showing this to my teams this week as we go into our biggest meet of the year.  Hopefully it lights a little fire under them and it should be a great week.  Wish us luck!
