Training: Week 12

I don't know if I would call this week "training" per se, or if I should just refer to it as "trying-not-to-puke-from-nerves."  I traveled to North Carolina for work on Labor Day and spent the week trying to stay loose, stay off of my feet, and hydrate a ton!  Some days it worked, some days it didn't.  I drank at least one coconut water a day and majorly cut back on alcohol.  I also majorly cut back in mileage... see below.  My legs were nothing, if not rested :)

The week leading up to the event only includes September 7-10 because the race happened on September 11 and 12.  That re-cap will come soon.

Weekly Re-Cap:

Monday: 1000 yd swim
Tuesday: 3 mile jog
Wednesday: off
Thursday: 1.5 mile walk

Total: Is it even worth adding that up?  (4.5 for those of you counting)

I did my swim at the pool I used to coach at with two friends and it was so fun going back to my old stomping grounds and getting in a good swim/chatfest.

I also did my runs in NC, which means that the hills were a-plenty.  It was a wonderful wake-up call for me when the little "hills" of Raleigh/Durham killed me.  I was nowhere near ready for the actual mountains of the Blue Ridge Relay (hint: foreshadowing!).  But I survived and I think it went alright.

DAYS until the Blue Ridge Relay - 0 (yikes!!!)

Training: Week 11

Well, I am officially late with this post, but I'm going to make sure I keep you all updated...

Week 11 was my first week of taper (Aug 31 - Sept 6)!  Yay!!  I dialed back the mileage to make sure my legs got some rest and recovery.  In all honesty, I probably dialed back a little too far, but now that all is said and done and it all worked out, I think that's aright!

Weekly re-cap:

Monday: off
Tuesday: 5 miles
Wednesday: 4.5 miles
Thursday: off
Friday: off
Saturday: 1.5 miles
Sunday: 3.5 miles

Total: 14.5 miles

One week til the Blue Ridge Relay!!

During my last run in Chicago, I outran a storm and got some really cool pictures.  My pace was also significantly faster on this run.  Go figure.

Training: Week 10

This week was a great week!  Good thing - as we are now two weeks out, I'm starting a tiny taper.  The mileage I got in last week will give me something to taper down from.  :)

Weekly Re-Cap:

Monday: 2 miles
Wednesday: 4 miles
Thursday: 4 miles
Friday: 2 miles
Sunday: 12.5 miles

Total: 24.5 miles

Look what I found on my run. A nice little happy moment in the midst of the city.

Countdown to BRR: 2 weeks!  EEK!!

Training: Week 9

The perfect setting for a recovery swim!
Week 9 was a great week!  My friend and I have become each other's accountability partners in regards to training and it has kept me honest about my workouts.  We text each other after each workout and if we haven't heard from the other in a while, we know to check in. Knowing that she's going to be asking about my workouts really motivates me.

This week I was back up in mileage and it felt great.  Maybe a rest week was just what I needed?  :)

Weekly Re-Cap:
Monday: 2.5 + 2.5 miles
Tuesday: off
Wednesday: 8 miles + 30 min swim
Thursday: 2 miles + 2 games of beach volleyball
Friday: off
Saturday: off
Sunday: 14.5 miles (first 7 were hills!)

Total: 29.5 miles

This week also marked the start of my dry month!  Hopefully that will help my morning runs :)

My long Saturday run was done in St. Charles again and it was a cool morning, with a threat of rain. To me, that was the perfect forecast! The rain held off and I got a lovely long jog in while I enjoyed the cooler weather.   I don't know about you, but I actually love running in rain.  Weird? maybe.

Countdown to BRR: 3.5 weeks!  AHHHHHHH! Sh*ts getting real.

Birthday Celebrations

I am now 31.  Wowza.  I thought 30 was a breeze compared to 31.  30 was exciting and new and I planned so many fun things.  31, on the other hand, snuck up on me and instigated a whole lot of deep thinking.  It's funny how birthdays can do that.  They put things in perspective, make you set goals and aspirations, and they also give you a healthy dose of realism.

This years celebrations included a family weekend in the burbs, complete with a bonfire...

That was followed by a fun-filled weekend in the city kicked off with a celebration at work and dinner with the family, then on to the Air and Water Show, rooftop fun, and a Cubs vs. Sox game!

Overall, I am a lucky gal.  My family and friends are amazing!  They always know how to make me feel very special and loved.

Training: Week 8

Good thing week 7 was a good week.  This week was not.  I'm going to give myself a pass though, it was my birthday week!  That's right, I am in fact, another year older.  More to come on my birthday soon. For now, in the interest of keeping myself accountable, I will still report my training for the week.  Even if it is rather sad (and a tad bit late).

Weekly Re-Cap:
Sunday: off
Monday: 2 + 4.5 miles
Tuesday: off
Wednesday: 4 miles
Thursday: 1.5 miles + 31 burpees, + 31 lunges + 31 sit-ups (birthday tradition!)
Friday: off
Saturday: off

Total: 12 miles
yikes. good thing this was supposed to be a recovery week!

Training: Week 7

Finally!  I can report a great week of training!   I got all of my runs in and I hit my target mileage.  I even ventured out into the suburbs to get some hill training in.  Success!

Weekly Re-Cap
Monday: 4 + 5 miles
Tuesday: off
Wednesday: 2 miles + strength training
Thursday: 6 miles
Friday: off
Saturday: 11 miles (5 of which were hills!)

Total: 28 miles

I'm starting to feel stronger and my overall pace is starting to pick up.  I'll take it!
It's about darn time - we are 5 weeks out from the Blue Ridge Relay!

I did my long run in my hometown of St. Charles, IL this weekend and it was gorgeous!  There were also plenty of hills for me to run.

Training: Week 6

This week was a little rough.  I do hope that isn't becoming a theme here.  I got to days of double runs in, but missed my long run.  This week I am back at it already and getting in those miles!
Weekly Re-Cap

Sunday: swim
Monday: 5 + 4.5 miles
Tuesday: swim
Wednesday: off
Thursday: 3 + 3.5 miles
Friday: walk on the riverwalk
Saturday: water skiing

Total: 16 miles

As you can see I am counting water skiing this week as a workout.  I had the luck of joining some of my friends on their boat on Saturday and it was fabulous!  To be completely honest though, I feel really old right about now.  On Sunday morning I could barely move.  I felt like a truck had run me over.  When did I get so old and frail?!  It's now Monday night and I still feel sore, but it's finally getting better.  Apparently those were muscles that I haven't used in years.

Either way, it was totally worth it, here are some pictures from the day.

Training: Week 5

This past week, things got serious! The weather was gorgeous, I was consistent, and I stuck to the plan (for the most part).  I did my first double (and a triple within 24 hours).  That will be a weekly occurrence from here on out to help me get ready for the relay.  The one tip I had was to get used to running tired and to be accustomed to running more than once a day.

It is good advice.  The second run of the day can be soul crushing - your joints hurt, your bones are tender, and your muscles feel like they might snap.  Like any good athlete, now I'm going to do that over and over again until it doesn't affect me.  Ha! I know something is working because I was completely spent all last week - I had no energy at all and the 10 k on Saturday, that should have been great, felt more like a 15 mile race than a 6 mile race.  Hopefully the energy will come back soon!

Re-cap of the week:

Sunday: 4.5 miles
Monday: 3 + 3 miles
Tuesday: off
Wednesday: 4.5 miles
Thursday: swim
Friday: 3 miles
Saturday: 6.2 miles (Big Ten 10k)

Total: 24.2 miles
