Back to Fit

I'll get back to my vacation overview on Wednesday :) Today, I'm going to start a new Monday "thing."  Bare with me...

I used to be an athlete.  I was a swimmer and then a runner. I swam my entire life, through high school and college.  I even swam when I coached post-college.  When swimming got old, I started running.  Let's be honest - I started running because I liked to eat (and drink), and swimming twice a week just wasn't cutting it.

Running started as a chore and quickly became a habit, a happy place, and an escape from technology.  I ran three half-marathons and two marathons, and I was in the best shape of my life.  And then life got crazy, things got hectic, I moved, and all of a sudden,I woke up yesterday (errr, a few months ago) and I was incredibly out of shape!  What is going on?!  I don't know, but I don't like it.

Over the next few months, I am going to document my journey back to being a fit me.  I wrote about the 10 mile race I did a few weeks ago and that was the first of many steps in recognizing this needed change.  I have three races scheduled for this summer.  Two small ones and one big one.  I am going to document my weekly training on here and share with you my highs and my lows.  Get pumped- it might not be exciting- but it will be real.

Week 1 of Training: June 22-28

I felt like poop.  I had just come back from three weeks of vacation, I had a bad cold and my allergies were out of control, but I got some workouts in!

Monday: 4 mile run (I think I stopped every mile to walk )
Tuesday: 5 mile walk home from work
Wednesday: 3 mile run (weirdly, I felt good) + volleyball game
Thursday: 2.5 mile slow run
Friday: Off
Saturday: 6 miles! (my longest run in weeks - it was not pretty and I wish I would had brought tissues - hello allergies - but I did it!!)
Sunday - Off

Total : 15.5 miles

It's not amazing, but it's a decent start.  This week I've added to it and I've got a plan, so hopefully I can keep moving forward and feeling better.  Here is a picture from my run on Sunday.  The weather was gorgeous and that definitely helped to motivate me!

Next up, healthier eating.  Yikes.  This, I struggle with. A lot.

Europe Part 1: In Brugge

Soonafter my trip to St. Maarten, I headed to Europe.  I landed in Brussels, headed to Brugge, then on to Breda, and then Amsterdam.  It was a whirlwind of a trip with a bike tour, a wedding, and a night at the clubs thrown in.  I've got lots to share!
First up, was Brugge.   It's a gorgeous little midevil town with lots of character, windmills, architecture, and waffles!

Restaraunt: PomperLut
Waffes: Sweet Bruges

St. Maarten Getaway

A few weeks ago I headed down to the islands with 12 of my closest friends for a long weekend of sand and sun.  It was amazing.   Seriously, I haven't relaxed like that or seen beaches that pristine, well, ever.  If you've never been, please go!

I went to celebrate my good friend, Andrea's, 30th birthday!  We did two days at the house and lounged by the pool, a day on a catamaran, and a day at the beach.  It was perfect.

When can I go back?

 The Birthday Girl!!

Day on the Boat!!

Beach Day

It was the kind of vacation that you only have in your dreams.
Like I said before, when can I go back?  And who's coming with me?

First Race of 2015

This weekend I participated in a 10 mile run in Chicago and it was so fun!

I was a little nervous leading up to the race because the last time I ran over 8 miles was in 2013.  October of 2013.  That's a long time and I had no idea if I was trained well or not.  Leading up to the race, I did two long runs of 7.5 and 8 miles and a few short runs in between.

Overall, it went really well!  I finished the race strong (on the 50 yard line of Soldier Field!!)  and I immediately went home and signed up for two more races this summer.  I couldn't contain my excitement, but now let's hope I can keep it up!

All of the running is to help prepare me for a mountain race that I am doing in September.  I was worried that I wouldn't be ready for it, so I have been signing up for more events to help keep me motivated to train and be in shape.  I assume that if I pay for it, I have to do it!

I'll leave you with a parting shot of the skyline from the south... I rarely get this point-of-view and it is rather gorgeous!
